June's recap and why my specials posts don't say gluten free

Welcome to the Kati Keksi monthly newsletter, bringing together the latest content from the Kati Keksi website as well as highlights from social media including Facebook and Instagram.

Hey!

It's... mid-year. The depths of winter. Tax time. Mid-summer (if you're European or European at heart).

I've lasted well so far but in the last days I got a cold so it's been nothing but couch time for me.

Except for that hour and a half on Wednesday when I hauled myself over to Woolworths to do the supermarket specials photos.

Why I say specials and not gluten free specials

Every week when I post my supermarket specials I'll get at least four or five queries on products (or the whole post) "is this really gluten free?" or worse "this is wrong, it's not gluten free."

I can assure you it all is!

I used to write in the post "all the gluten free specials" but I stopped doing that and it's for two simple reasons, the algorithm and my time.

On a good day I can get all the photos taken in about 40 minutes. I don't buy much while I'm in there, usually fewer than 10 products.

It's a lot of time.

On days with my kid in tow, or when I'm tired or a bit dazed it blows out to an hour.

As you might be aware, I do receive payments from Facebook in what is called content monetization or the performance bonus program.

The better your posts perform, the more money you may earn.

They don't earn much, even with 30,000 followers. Buuuuut, if non-followers start seeing your posts (because the algorithm shows it to them) then you can start to earn more.

That difference could be going from $5 a post up to $20.

So the reason I don't mention gluten free in the caption is to try to entice non-followers to browse the photos. Because they are still great products, the savings are useful and there are plenty of things non-GF folks would buy.

Luckily I'm doing it for people, not money

I'll admit, I have complained loudly to my family when a supermarket post got just $3 dollars. I'd already had a terrible day and had to go to the store twice (the tickets weren't up at midday!!).

But, money isn't why I make those supermarket posts.

If it was, I would have stopped doing them around April last year.

I do it for the positive responses I get.

I get so much joy and satisfaction from the comments people leave, amazed at what is available to them, thrilled they've found something new or their gloriously happy disbelief at something unexpected.

I love the playful chastising comments too, about gaining weight or spending too much. 😁

Food can bring so much joy. It's good to be reminded that even with a diet as restrictive as gluten free that there is still so much joy to be had.

And if you're wondering - if a specials post makes $15 then I'm content. It usually does. :)

The second half of 2025

I guess I should be thinking about what will be happening for the second half of the year.

Usually I will have a month or two of content ideas for the website. Some written, some just the bare bones.

I've had some great ideas for posts / guides sent in to me as well (thank you!). I keep a list and I work on them subject to time and availability of information.

Sometimes articles stall because I can't get to a store to verify information (for example if no store in my area has it), other times it's because I feel like the hours I'm putting in won't be paid off in it's popularity (or lack thereof).

One thing I could potentially write about is answering those questions that come up just a little too often in gluten free Facebook groups.

The ones where, across two or three replies you get the full answer.

There's a lot of knowledgable people out there but there's also a lot of lingering incorrect, or rather out of date, information that often comes up.

If there's a gluten free question that you think needs a deep dive, let me know.

I hope you're keeping warm and dry wherever you are!
