Kati Keksi's January recap, welcome to 2025!

Welcome to the Kati Keksi monthly newsletter, bringing together the latest content from the Kati Keksi website as well as highlights from social media including Facebook and Instagram.

Hey there!

It’s kind of wild that it’s already the end of January. 1/12 of the year, done.

I’ve seen lots of parents sharing that their kids are starting kinder, primary school and high school. There specials at the supermarket are all geared towards return-to-school with offers on lunchbox snacks.

It’s a bit hard to imagine that it could be next year that my kid is going to kinder! She’s not yet two, but gosh she’s growing fast.

How 2025 is looking so far

The other night I was looking at some stats from my website. It shows the number of people arriving at my site through Google search.

Everyone loves a visual so I thought I’d share a screenshot of what it has looked like over the last year. It really demonstrates the impact that an algorithm change can have - positive or negative.

That big dip is the algorithm update from Easter 2024. And the big jump to the right is the latest algorithm change that happened just before Christmas.

I call that my Christmas present from Google 😁.

Easter is coming

February will see the launch of my annual Easter egg guide covering all the major brands, including dairy free.

It’s hard to know when is the right time to release it. Some products are out so early, like Cadbury, while other smaller retailers like Haighs don’t release their range until six weeks before Easter.

What I do know is that we’re already eating Easter eggs. I just ate a pineapple one while drafting this newsletter 😁.

Each year really I only have two worries. That products will

  • change ingredients / may contains without notice, and / or
  • disappear from shelves entirely.

Last year the biggest scandal was the Lindt white chocolate bunny. Out of nowhere it had a may contain for wheat / gluten.

What’s worse, is that it appeared on Coeliac Australia’s Easter egg guide! They hadn’t bothered to check in person 😕.

The first year I made the Easter guide I went into the CBD and checked all the stores like Myer, David Jones and Haighs.

These days with a toddler that is a little bit trickier.

So let me tell you, I absolutely appreciate updates on products from you all.

Last year I had a few folks following me who worked in supermarkets and specialty grocers. They sent me messages of changed ingredients and they checked products where details were hard to come by.

As much as I’m a one woman show, it’s a team effort when you look at all the people in my inbox helping me out so I can share the information as far as possible 🥰.

One little whinge

Cadbury updated their website. There’s no longer any allergen information and no photos of the ingredients so it’s basically useless for us. Thanks guys 😅🤦🏼‍♀️.

And something fun

I got a message late one night in January that I'd made an appearance on news.com.au ! Turns out my post about pineapple chocolate eggs (which had gone a bit viral...) was used as the base for an article.

And to add on, that article linked to another one that talked about hot cross buns being out in December. It even had quotes from the comments section!

It's really great to see content about coeliac / gluten free life in mainstream media. Even if it's a bit of a hyped up article, it's still something and hopefully it paves the way for increasing awareness (and respect) of coeliac disease and others who need to eat gluten free.

Thanks for reading my rambling thoughts, enjoy the newsletter!

New gluten free products, January 2025

This is my first time testing out a new format for sharing new products. Let me know what you think, there's more than ten new things this month!

Most popular content on Facebook

What's been big on Facebook this month?

  • It would be remiss of me not to include the pineapple eggs post, but more importantly I also reviewed them.
  • Arnott's will be launching a new gluten free biscuit that looks rather similar to an Oreo. Rumour is we'll see it mid-February so keep your eyes peeled (and message me if you see it!)
  • Also from Arnott's we had confirmation that they are discontinuing their GF chocolate ripple.
  • Newly gluten free (no longer a may contain) are the classic Mint Pattie chocolates.
  • We've also got not one, but three new mini egg options from Nestle covering KitKat, Crunch and Smarties. I'll feature them all in an article this month on new GF Easter eggs for 2025.

Instagram @kati_keksi

Do you follow me on Instagram? I tend to post different content there compared to Facebook so it's worth checking out both.

Here's what I've been sharing this month.

  • I discovered we've got KitKat mini eggs this year! I've seen these overseas in Europe so it's great they're bringing them to Australia.
  • Naturally I shared the Arnott's cookies and cream news on Instagram. It also kicked off a discussion and poll for what you'd like to see next. The result may surprise you.
  • I visited BangPop in Melbourne for a quick dinner before going to see Penn and Teller. It was my first time there, but I know it's a favourite among Melbourne coeliacs.
  • And I got in my reel of January's new products. Great for sharing, or to save so you can find the products easily at the supermarket.

New product alerts

Here's just a few of the new gluten free products I've seen in the last month. For the full list check out my article linked above.

  • Tasty prawn skewers with bacon or chorizo. I tried the bacon, it was great!
  • Tip Top cafe style raisin toast, everyone has been saying this is a winner.
  • Carman's bars, now with even more protein - I'll be posting a review of these in February.
  • And more bars from Sam's and Mayver's!

Be sure to follow me on Facebook where I post everything I find, and if you prefer, follow me on Instagram for a monthly reel summary.
